Car Insurance

Protect yourself against restrictions and limitations

Everyone knows there is fine print on their car insurance policy and most usually ignore this and never take the time to read this at all. The problem is that in this fine print are the restrictions and limitations that the insurance company has set. If these limitations are not met, the insurer can lose the benefits.

In most car insurance policies, if you take the time to read the fine print is a provision that states the notification requirements. In most cases, the requirement is the insurance company must be notified within 30 days of a hit and run accident. There are also separate provisions for other conditions such as underinsured and uninsured motorist, which often are immediate notice. The insurance company will in most cases, also have a provision that states they can change the filing requirements any time. If the insured person does not contact the insurance within the required time, they can actually lose their insurance coverage altogether.

Another stipulation that most individuals overlook are the provisions that may be items that will covered by their health insurance. Many times the same coverage’s overlap between insurance companies. It is best to know exactly what you need with your car insurance and ensure your health insurance is not covering the same benefits or you are paying for benefits with your auto insurance that you actually do not need.

Accident settlement amounts are always too low. After an accident, most insurance companies will send out an agent even while you may still be in the hospital to give you a settlement. Since you are injured and worried about all the mounting bills, most people do not realize that is an offer and not a settlement. If you take the money then it is a settlement. You should consider just how much this accident has costs you in the way of damages to your vehicle, the hospital bills, and days you will be missing work. If you were concerned that the amount offered is far less than you feel you should receive, it would be in your best interest to contact an accident attorney.

Check your car insurance and be sure you are covered for underinsured or uninsured motorist in the amount of at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident. This will be a welcome amount in the case of being involved in an accident with another person that does not have coverage or does not have enough coverage.

Always read the fine print of your car insurance policy. If you do not understand the policy, you can speak with your agent. If you are still confused, it never hurts to talk with an attorney.
