If you have a student heading off to college this fall and you are considering what should done about our family health insurance. The answer is to keep your college student on the family plan or at least have an individual health plan for the student.
Leaving home and heading off to college is a huge transition for parents and the kids, if you can call them that any longer. The pressure is the college student to make good grades and they are on their own to make the right decisions in life. The worst case scenario is that now that they are on their own, they do not take care of themselves properly and can come down with a wide array of illnesses and may even be involved in various accidents all requiring medical attention.
If the student is working his or her way through college, the money they earn will barely pay for food and the supplies for school, if they are living in the dorm. If they are renting, the money they need is even higher.
Now the worst news hits, your college student is in the hospital. He or she has come down with the flu and had to be placed in the hospital. Your child did not get the flu shot as you suggested and did not visit the doctor when symptoms started, so now he or she is in serious condition.
The first thing that happens is the hospital will ask if the student has health insurance. Of course, he or she is not sure and you will get a telephone call. Aren't you glad you have insurance to cover the costs of the hospital bills?
You cannot be with your college student every day and may not be able to control their every move, but you can provide with them health insurance that will ensure they are not stuck with such large hospital and doctor bills. If you talk with your college student before they leave for college and explain they have coverage, they will be more apt to visit the physician when needed so the chances of staying healthy will increase ten fold. Starting life after college with a large amount of medical bills to pay is not the way to begin your life. Just by having health insurance for your college student, you can ensure this debt will never occur and they enjoy their college years and be prepared to take on a career when they are finished with college.
To find the best and most affordable health insurance for your student college, you need to compare the various health insurance companies in your local area. By comparing, you will be able to find the most benefits for your money.
